Suitable Steel for grinding 1

Please help if you can.
I am needing to specify a suitable steel which needs to be ground. I am attaching a V-guide linear bearing system so the surface profile is quite critical.
I am presuming that the steel (preferably not stainless) needs to be hardened prior to grinding but do not know how hard the different steels need to be and if there is any other processing that needs to be done after grinding.
I am new to this sort of thing - most of my work is with aluminium so...

Here is list of some of the Tool & Die steels available that will give you a very good finish.

We use the D2 material for the majority of our products that requires a fine finish. This material is air cooled, very little change on heat treatment, and has excellent wear resistance.
