I am going to be starting a Master's in Measurement and Control Engineering at Idaho State University. I would like to do an internship this summer before I start there in the fall.

I have decided that would like to eventually live and work in Colorado. Should I apply for only internships in Colorado? What if my dream internship is in another state? Is it more important to do the most relevant internship for my career, or do a less relevant internship in Colorado? (so I can make connections in Colorado)

Many folks here report that they have had to move, in some cases changing continents, in order to change jobs. Restricting your search to just one state severely limits your options. ... which doesn't mean you won't find anything, just that it may take some time.

You probably should have started searching months ago...

What industry are you looking at? If it is Oil & Gas, you'd be better off limiting your search to Planet Earth. So far in this downturn 355,000 employees have lost their jobs in the U.S. alone. I don't know of many companies anywhere that are even considering projects that interns would be assigned to (let alone hiring interns).

You said you doubt companies are hiring Indeed. com has hundreds of engineering internship job openings around the US.

Hey, we wish you well, and we don't wish to argue with you.

Do let us know how your search progresses, and also how your internship goes.

You've yet to say what industry you were looking for. zdas04 was specifically referring to oil and gas. In any case, relevant experience is, in general, way better than that non-relevant, and engineering is better than non-engineering. Look specifically for a job where you'll be doing more than gopher work.

Sorry, I don't mean to argue, Mike, I guess I just wondered if there's something you know that I don't? Why am I finding so many internships on the internet (indeed.com and monster.com). Should I not be looking there for internships? What do you suggest? I honestly want to learn and be open to advice.

Also, IRstuff, I want to go into Control Engineering.

"control engineering" appears in the annals of hundreds of industries.

Given that I only have degrees in Mathematics, and I'm not starting my MS in engineering til the Fall, do I have enough of a chance of getting an engineering internship this summer that it would be worth it to apply, or would I just be wasting my time?

Applying costs you only time.

Have you done _any_ work for an outfit that does controls or engineering of any kind?
We here don't need to know, but prospective employers sure would like to see stuff like that.
