I am unclear as to the purpose or advantage of using suppress vs hide when working with assemblies.
Thanks,
Dan T

If you Hide a component, it is still in the assembly, and nothing is effected (like Mates). Just consider it the same as setting your Transparency to 100%.

If you Supress a component, you basically remove it (and associated Mates) from the assembly, which might introduce new errors.

Dan T,
Suppressing a Part or Assembly will also remove it from the BOM after a rebuild. Depending on what your BOM settings are set at.

I use hide for temporary removal of a part to look at another. I use suppressing of parts when creating configurations.

ctopher,

I still use the hide for configurations, with SW2004 you can use the "Exclude from BOM" check box in the properties window (works well as long as you are using SW BOM and not the Excel BOM). Using hide and the exclude doesn't seem to create as many problems with mates. We generally have small assemblies so this idea may not work for larger aseemblies.

We don't use BOM in SolidWorks and our assemblies are usually large. So, it works for us. But I do agree with you.

Also in the suppressed state the part is not included in any mass properties analysis whereas a hidden part is part of any calculations.
