Hi all,
I typically use 100 psf for surcharge loading if a residential driveway is behind a retaining wall. This accounts for light traffic and parking. Is there a code reference out there for this load used, and can you provide it?
Thanks.

A surcharge load of 250 psf was used, when I design public works/earth retaining structures with possibility of vehicular access. Note that IBC and ASCE7 require the design live load as "Sidewalks, vehicular driveways, and yards subject to trucking - 250 psf uniform load". While I believe the development of this requirement had truck traffic in mind, and is excessive for residential driveways, but there is no specific mentioning of design live load for it.

A 100 psf surcharge might be justifiable by comparison with typical garage design live load (40 psf-50 psf), or evaluate the pressure produced by the largest passenger vehicle. However, I would be reluctant to use it, as there is nothing to back it up, but your own judgement.

I'm fine with whatever the local code says for residential garage loading (30/40 psf) unless there's an expecxtation that fire truck access will be required.

I usually do the old school thing of designing for 2' of extra fill as surcharge which is usually more than this. If the results are not too eye popping, I'll also design to passive pressures rather than active to limit wall rotation. This probably gets me back to something close to your 100 psf when all is said and done.

I'm afraid that I don't know of a code reference for any of this.
