Surface Finish examples

A fab shop questioned the surface finish callout on a drawing one of our other engineers sent them before vanishing into thin air. No body else is around so I tried to field the estimator questions. Where can I find examples of what different stainless finishes actually look like? What are the standards organizations for such?

I don't need flatness or such, just something better then "shiny" or "less shiny"

You can go to a supplier of surface roughness devices and they have ref. standards.
Or, if you any old time stainless salesmen they may still have a collection of surface finish samples.

The real question is what is being required? It needs to be a measurable such as Ra. Anything else is bogus and should be rejected unless they are also defining how to measure it.

The part is 304 plate with tubing welded to it. It's a chase for plumbing to pass through a bulkhead.

What I want is no color distortion from the welds, and the weld area to look semi flat, with a grain that is uniform around the part. A finish similar to stainless steel hinges or large Stainless bolts.

These are polished finishes, not end milled, if it matters to the nomenclature.

You can find weld color and surface info in AWS documents. This is a big deal for sanitary service applications.
There are limits on weld concavity and roughness (wavyness) too.
