Hello Community,

I have to rework some drawings into NX6 format. I want to create a dimension that is above a vertical/horizontal stub and has a surface finish symbol behind it. Please, refer to the attached image.

Greetings

have you worked with finish symbols on NX previously ?

Not in NX. I am pretty new to the NX philosophy and recently got trained for it. I rely on my perseverance and help of the community. I did play a lot yesterday with the surface finish symbols. Today I got it done by setting the dimension to horizontal and the "text above stub" option in the radial tab. This is of course done in the style menu of the dimension. I added some empty text behind the dimension value to extend the stub of the dimension. I placed the surface finish symbol in a point behind the value. Unfortunately I can't associate the surface finish symbol to the dimension, so that when you move the dimension you drag the symbol as well.

As much as I've tried, I don't think that you can make surface finish symbols associative to the object you place them on (dimension, extension line, edge of geometry, etc); they just become 'fixed' in place on the sheet and can't be moved again.
As a result, I've always left putting surface finish symbols on the drawing until the end, so I hopefully dont have to move the view/dimension again and then have to re-create the symbol.

I'd also love to know if I was doing anything wrong and you can make these symbols associative.

Place the symbol, then go to Edit -> Annotation -> Origin...; select the surface finish symbol then the "offset character" icon (the one with the X Y dimensions), turn on the associative option and select the dimension to associate to, then press Apply. If the symbol isn't where you want it, reselect it, pick different alignment and/or scale factors and press Apply again. Repeat until the symbol is where you want it in relation to the dimension. Now when you drag the dimension around the surface finish symbol will follow.

Note that Edit Origin also works with other drafting objects. Also, there are other origin options available (align horizontal, vertical, point constructor) that may be more appropriate to what you want to do.

It is not letting me choose the symbol when I go to Edit -> Annotation -> Origin. I can choose any dimension but not the surface finish symbol itself.
