Greetings,
Are there any tests that can be done when putting distribution(indoor) type arrestors in service? Are there any recommendations or requirements from IEEE?
Thanks,
EE

Check this out. It gives a pretty comprehensive guide for all kind of field testing for arresters.

Hope it helps.

To help ensure full service life and reduce the risk of sudden failure, surge arresters should be maintained and electrically tested at regular intervals. Inspection and testing should also be carried out as part of the new systems prior to commissioning.

[li]Mechanical / Visual Inspection: The physical and mechanical condition of the surge arrester should be checked before any tests are carried out.[/li]

[li]Surge Arrester Lead Inspection: The lead length for the connection of the surge arrester to the equipment terminals and to the ground should be reduced and mounted as straight, eliminating the bends in the lead as possible.[/li]

Would keeping the arrester energized 99.99% of the time be the same as testing them?

We likely have more problems with the pole ground then the arrester.
