Hello all,
A friend of mine has SW2001 at his workplace and would like to know if he can use that same serial for registering a home version (SW2007)as well. I know SW allows for 2 installs per serial but I am not sure about the different years he is using.

Thanks,
BB

The serial number needs to match that of the source disks.

The S/N is not tied to a disk, although it is tied to the level of the software, i.e., Standard, Professional, or Premium. If the serial number is legit and not in use more than twice then he should be able to legally register it for his home machine. Besides, what harm is there in trying? Either it works or it doesn't.

Not necessarily. We're talking about 2007, not more recent versions. 2001 is definitely tied to the disk.

I would also think that his workplace would need to have purchased maintenance for that serial number for the 2007 release.

In 2007 they changed the process of how users license standalone licesenes. This was the first release where you can activate it over the internet. 2001 is the old way and it is tied to the CD, unlike Updraft's comment above. As far as I know you will not be able to use the same serial number for 2007, even if you have paid up Subs to at least 2007, but you can try it.

I am pretty sure there is no way it will work. 2001 still had 16 digit numeric serial numbers. Somewhere around 2003~2005 they added 8 alphanumeric characters. If you had an old serial number and you were on subscription, they told you the new numbers in order to install the new version. If you don't know those additional characters, it won't work at all.

If you have 2007 installed with valid license you can Install and run 2001 and should be able to run any version earlier you could run 2001 but why you'd want to is behind me unless you have a time travel machine you want to let us know of Dr. Brown

The number of features and functionality in 2001 version is probably less than all the current functionality created since that version.
How many Install Discs were there for the 2001 Install???
Or was it distributed on Floppy [rofl]

The 24 Character License Code was Implemented as of the 2008 Release and activation was added to prevent more than 2 seats being installed Work + Home. The code kept the 2007 and earlier first 16 digits but added the last 8. SolidWorks implemented the Activation process to prevent the widespread License Abuse seen in software like AutoCAD which may have been suported by AutoDesk to increase market share through widespread adaptation of software.

The above is my own opinion and does not reflect the attitude of my current place of business or Eng-Tips.

Update to the above post.

Even 2007 now requires a full 24 char Alpha Numeric (AN) serial
NNNN NNNN NNNN NNNN AAAA AAAA
(Where each 'N'is a number and each 'A' is an alpha-numeric)

If your/his company does not have 2008 version I'm not sure if they'll give the alpha numeric values to you unless you are on subscription. If the company is running a Network License Those do not have Home Edition Serials unless you request them.

Good luck in your endeavors. Never even seen the 2001 version and definately don't have the Disc/Discs I doubt it was larger than 1CD. My thoughts are you'll still need to buy a new license If they are running 2001 and are not doing new installs the Co. will do okay but to have a home version work with a 16 digit code you'll need to buy a machine off the companies hands or have them donate it. But then the'll need a 24 char code to install 2001 again.
