Hi all,

My client is considering the use of a Swing Flex check valve , 30" diameter on raw sewage. Velocity upstream of the valve is 1.5m/s. Has anyone any good or bad experiences of this style of check valve. It has a reinforced rubber flap that moves through a short arc of 35 degrees.

The manufacturer claims it can be installed in the vertical however I am reticent to do this on raw sewage.

Is reverse velocity versus deceleration data available for surge analysis?

Yes, I have enquired of the manufacturer but would like some independent feedback.

Check valves in raw sewage is tough, Our crew has installed check valves of all sorts in differant waste water applications. First, the check valve in question must have a stainless steel seat, it's been our experiance that brass seats (or other soft metals, bronze) get beat up when the city runs their jet and pressure steamer down the lines to clean them. In fact the city requires that the flapper has to be constructed of non-ferrous metal as well. Big dollars though, the S.S also heps "cut" the tampons and other stringer item found in waste water. Check valve in question could be installed in the vertical, keep in mind the head pressure on the up side of the valve. When the pump shuts off, the weight of all the fluids will slam the check valve shut, a rubber seat does not have the duty cycle that a solid seat has...

Red Valve Company makes an all-rubber (or other elastomers) check valve that can be installed either on the end of or inside a pipe to act as a check valve. I think the name of the valve is "Tideflex". Pricey valves though, for seemingly just a hunk of rubber. They will invert given a high enough back pressure against the valve.
