I've searched the internet to find an answer but did not find a clear result, I hope you can help me:

We would like to make the design for a pressure vessel for Switzerland. We are wondering if the European Pressure Equipment Directive is applicable. If not, which other Swiss design code is prescribed.

The design pressure is 2 barg and the volume will be about 500 liters.

If your vessel contains a Group 2 liquid (with pD lower than 0.5 bar), with the values you provided (2 bar and 500 liters) in falls into sound engineering practice category.

Thus, PED is not applicable.

What is you medium inside vessel?

The medium in the vessel is a group 2 gas which results in PED category 3. I see my question is not clear, what I meant was:

Is the PED applicable in Switzerland?

I know that Switzerland is not part of the EU or EEA but for me it is not clear if the PED is or is not integrated in their law somehow.

As I understand it legally it is not a requirement as the PED is only obligatory within the EU, in my experience though most clients still ask for it.

Remember the PED is a directive not a design code though.

Added to that I think switzerland actually uses an equivalent called the Pressure Equipment Ordinance (SR 819.121) which is an equivalent to the PED hence compliance with the PED will suffice but dont quote me on that!

Is your question whether or not the PED as a directive in it's whole is applicable in Switzerland, i.e. by national/european legislation?
I believe it's not.

If your question is in which category the vessel will fall, Htpv has answered that.

However it's more important to determine whether or not you're obligated (by law) to supply acc to the PED..

PS: you may want to have a look at this link, which is a program from Lloyd's that auto-calcs the modules etc after some required input (medium, pressure, volume/DN). Not sure if the program is available in English though.

Switzerland converted the PED 97/23/EC into national law as all EC members did. Switzerland is - as you wrote - not part of the EC but the Swiss accept a lot of EC standards like machine directive and ATEX directive. If your vessel is made acc. to PED and if it fullfils all PED requirements and if that is confirmed by a declaration of conformity, you will be allowed to supply it to Switzerland.

mical, thnx for clearing that up. Do you have a link where such info is published? I had trouble finding info on member states at the PED site of the EU

Guys, thank you very much for your help. Using the SR 819.121 (together with a design code offcourse) is indeed the solution for us.

Actually the source of this question is that it is quite difficult to find which code is valid in which country. Does anyone know an overview or a program which can be used to determine this?

@rjvanhofwegen

Switzerland is a so called associate country , take a look at the following websites:

The following text can be found here:

Also the attachment can help you out!
