Can anyone give me a good resource for administering CATIA V5? I'm looking at setting up project wide Options, locking some and allowing the user to modify some. My questions center around distributing them to all project users.

Thanks....

You will need a shared directory for all users. Point to it using the CATReferenceSettingsPath environment variable. All users should have this environment setting, and have read access to this directory. You will need write access to this directory. Launch CATIA using the -admin option and have fun.

Now a question concerning the order in which the options are applied. Do the options which are set in the directory called out by CatReferenceSettingsPath take precedence over options a user may have set? The user only has read access to the shared directory.

I know if I lock an option as an admin the user cannot change this. However, if the admin sets option A=1 and the user sets option A=2 does the admin's apply first or does the user's? In my tests I've found the user's change would be written into their CATSettings directory on their workstation where they have write access but I'm not sure of the order they are applied.

Also, if the user were to login with the -admin option would they be able to write their changes to a directory or does putting read only access on the shared directory prevent this?

Thanks...

The user's settings will take precidence over the Admin settings unless the Admin Setting is locked.

Note: we have user's delete their settings so frequently that we have a utility that they can execute to do this for them. Then, they received any defaults that the Admin has chosen for them.

The user will not be granted Admin Mode unless he has write access to the directories pointed to by CATReferenceSettingsPath and CATCollectionStandard. Only if they reset these environment variables to somewhere they have write access to will they receive Admin Mode.

Sounds familiar...
