Systems which use resonance

Hi guys

I am busy with a proposal for my MSC, and struggling to find mechanical systems which use resonance in order to function or perform better. Looking for something whereby resonance is induced and maintained even when parameters are changed during operation.

A bit vauge but I would appreciate any information.

Note that my topic is on vibrating screens

I have worked on vibratory feeders for razor blade handles and vibratory conveyors for tires (power plant) and clams (fishing boat). Probably a few others that I don't recall.

Wave energy harvesters can maximize their energy production by tuning to resonance.
 
Helmholtz resonators, air intakes for cars in general, especially ones with switchable lengths, exhaust manifolds sometimes.

Google Vortex Bladeless wind generator and you will find a lot of videos of funny looking vibrating vertical rod-like structures that are supposed to generate energy from wind.


The resonance is tuned to the vortex shedding frequency. Having maximum motion of the rod allows them to extract maximum energy from the vibration (energy extracted acts like damping).

Vortex shedding frequency changes with windspeed. Also the magnitude of oscillations increase with windspeed. So they arrange a permanent magnet in such a way that it stiffens the system as the magnitude of oscillation increases, which increases the resonant frequency that is supposed to allow natural frequency to follow close to the vortex shedding frequency (a passive tuning system to maintain resonance over a wider range of wind speeds). As an added benefit, the non-linear stiffening spring gives a resonance characteristic similar to a Duffing oscillatoro shaped like a shark fin... (the olive-colored one pointing to the right) which abruptly drops resonant frequency at high magnitudes... they take advantage of this (supposedly) to protect the machine from damage from excessive movement if the wind speed gets too high ... then you reach the right-most tip of the shark fin and then it detunes itself.

I should add the company has been in business a long time raising money from investors by showing their funny looking videos, but I'm not sure they have demonstrated very much performance yet.
