On what conditions, Beams are designed as T-beams?

What is the difference on the response of beam designed either as rectangular or T-beam when subjected to seismic excitation?

Beams are designed as T-beams when they are cast monolithic with a slab.

The design method used by the designer has no effect on the response of the beam when subjected to seismic excitation.

By treating it as a T beam, you can save some reinforcing... especially for some heavy loaded items or long spans.

You're on the right track with this I believe. If T-Beam action is available, it will increase the probable moment capacity of your beam whether you choose to consider it or not. That matters a bit.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.
