T&G siding as shear wall 4

I have a client who is building post and beam structures. He is interested in using T&G siding for lateral stability in california. I know that they built buildings like this for years before plywood was invented. I just do not know how to justify it.


1. Does anyone know of tables that list values for T&G siding as a shear wall?

2. Are there any Requirments in IBC, UBC, ETC that prevent this from being used for seismic resistance?

I found a reference that says the 1983 version of the westerd wood manual may have a design procedure.

Does anyone have it to verify.

As far as I know the no current codes allow you to use lapped siding for shear wall strength. My house was built in 1975 here near Seattle, WA. It is a two story with only lapped siding. No diagonal bracing or anything else that I can find. Jut lapped siding, tarpaper, 2x4 studs and gypbd. It has withstood several earthquakes and many wind storms but it couldn't be built that way today. It definitely is flexible and moves in the big winds. That may have been what saves it.

Just because it was done that way in the past and stood up for 50 years doesn't me we can still do it.

found my answer in sections 4.3.7.5 and 4.3.7.7 of the reference.

diagonal sheathing is allowed in seismic zones a, b, c, and d

horiz. conventional sheathing is only allowed in a, b, and c.
