Hi,

I'm designing a structural glulam softwood deck using NDS 2015 Table 5A in its Y-Y axis. When I looked at the Shear Parallel to Grain value, footnotes 4 & 5 are implicated, but I'm having trouble understanding the applicability of footnote 5 and what exactly it means. If I'm using a glulam timber with multiple plies, wouldn't those plies be edge bonded along the wide face of the lamination? Is footnote 5 asking about edge bonding between adjacent members or within a glulam section? I'm sure there's a misunderstanding on my part, so I'm hoping someone can clarify.

Additionally, if I'm using a glued laminated beam in its Y-Y axis that is nominally 4 inches along the wide face of the lamination, what would be the "depth" of the glulam timber? I can't find manufacturer's catalogs for sizes that they would have on hand, so I'm trying to get an idea of how many panels we would need and what length to consider when I account for the expansion due to moisture.

Here is my interpretation of footnote 5:

The graphic makes a lot of sense, and I agree with your interpretation. That would make sense, too, in the case of a glued laminated panel system that was comprised of staggered pieces where the core pieces were not edge bonded before the laminations were bonded.

Really appreciate the answer. I couldn't find an answer anywhere on Google through multiple iterations.

Thank you
