Could someone help me with how 'Independent Pedaling System' in a tandem bike works, there are two mechanisms I know of, the Da Vinci's tandem and the Afar IPS. I know that coasting is possible with the free wheeler or the uni-directional bearing that they have used, but how is Independent pedaling possible???

I'm not clear about what you mean by Independent pedaling.
You want to be able to coast with one and still pedal with the other?
I have not seen this and not sure if possible.

Yeah, i asked about Independent Coasting, but there is a difference between Independent pedaling and independent coasting? Yeh, i'm gonna invent one, if there isn't one..

Go to the links in the other post to Bilenky Bikes. They do it by adding a freewheel to the crossover chain.
If it is a single cog freewheel you can coast or peddle independently but both riders have the same gear ratios. If the freewheel is multi-cog with a derailleur then both riders can choose separate gear ratios also.
Yes, it is a lot of chain and hardware, but it works.

Hmmm "Independent Coasting" that is exactly the reason I refuse to let my wife talk me into a tandem bike.

Monkey, that is also why I don't have this on either of my tandems, she at least have to be moving her feet!

IRStuff, too late. This seems like the 5th time he's asked substantially the same question without providing any clarification on the requirement that multiple pedals drive a single output. Previously he wanted to detour to electricity production, but has shifted gears.

Maybe this will steer him to at least creating a clear explanation of the goal(s):
