Hi brothers, recently got some recommendation to make the building design to be more "environmental friendly". LEED kind of consideration. Something good but needs more learning.

Soon, i come across a power point from authorities which recommending using "TANDUM WIRING" for fluorescent light . The idea i got about "tandum wiring" is sort of low lost ballast sharing between adjacent light fittings.

Anyone used this kind of wiring method before? What is the pro and cons? Thanks for the guidance.

The tandem wiring of fluorescent fixtures is used to minimize the quantity of ballasts in a given installation. For example, in a typical office, we may have two three-lamp fixtures. Normally we would have a two lamp and a single lamp ballast in each fixture to accomplish our dual switching requirement with the center lamps on one switch and the outboard lamps on another. With Tandem wiring, we accomplish the same thing with two ballasts, one two-lamp and one four-lamp ballast. This will lessen the input power requirement, (not signicicant in a single room but substantial in large installations), as well as minimize material and labor costs.

The downside of this is only that added care is required to make sure that all the spaces are properly coordinated with the ballasted and unballasted fixtures properly paired. As well as coordinating the tandem wiring fixture whips, etc....

Here in California there are additional requirements for controlling the "Daylit Zones", adjacent to all fenestration, which can complicate this a little bit more, but once you get used to doing it, it flows fairly smoothly.

Hope this is of some help.
