Tanks Shell plate SA516 Gr. 60 (K)

Hi,

we have a tank of sour water having shell plate as SA 516 Gr. 60(K). Can anyone please explain what is "K" refers in the plate MOC. Unable to find any reference?

I think "k" stands for killed steel which means normalized.

Killed steel involves adding certain elements to the steel, and is required for all A516 steel. Normalizing is an optional heat treatment. They are not the same thing and one doesn't imply the other.
Is the "K" maybe a footnote with a reference elsewhere?

Did you check the marking on the plate itself? The correct marking should be on the plate, as per the standard.

@ JStephen: I agree with you as SA516 itself is killed steel. I checked the drawing and there is no footnote of referencing K.
@ gr2vessels : It cannot be checked as the tank is painted and in service for last 5 years.

Any other idea?

I would like to point out one more thing that the tank is made of differential thickness i.e. shell course thickness varies from bottom to top with top is thinner.

Using different thicknesses from top to bottom is standard construction. If the drawings do not show the "K", I would think it is standard A516-60 and that the K shown in other paperwork referenced some other footnote rather than being a modification of the A516 specification.
