Tantalum tubing under B31.3 2

I am preparing a set of pipe calculations in accordance with B31.3 for a client. They have specified Tantalum UNS R05200 as one of the material specs at 300 C. I am not familiar with tantalum; searching online I found the specification ASTM B 521. I would like to adopt this according to 323.1.2. Can any point me to a reference for mechanical properties at elevated temperature or weigh in on the suitability of this material?

Tough one. Google did not "shake it out of the tree" for me.

Cabot Corp. has a lot of information on their web site:


But you need the yield strength at operating temperature and the UTS at operating temperature to derive the "allowable stresses" in accordance with paragraph 302.3.2. You will need a table of UTS/Yield vs. temperatures to be able to interpolate.

This tube is used as a pressure boundary material in ASME rated heat exchangers frequently, even though it is not an ASME material. Cabot or H K Starck would be good places to look for guidance in relation to using this material in ASME services, as would AstraCosmos, Tricor or others who build Ta exchangers and lined equipment.
