I was a big fan of Red Herring and I found out recently that it went extinct.

I also like the MIT Technology Review magazine, but not quite as much as I liked Red Herring.

WIRED has some good tech articles and of the science magazines I prefer Scientific American to Discover. Popular Mechanics can be ok.

So what do you recommend in the way of tech magazines?

As far as trade journals, I read a variety. PlasticNews (from previous job), Biomechanics (mainly focuses on soft tissue orthopaedics), ASM's Advanced Materials and Processes monthly magazine for my metallurgy fix and a Medical Device design magazine that I forget the name of.

I hope to get a subscription to Design News soon (I applied for it). I really enjoyed reading through one of my co-workers copies of that.

What are your favorites?

They're good and they're free.

I subscribe to MacAddict - it's the most practical computer magazine out there (provided you're into the Macintosh). The rest of the stuff, well, I read it on-line.

Design News is good and I also take a look at NASA Tech Briefs. Photonics Spectra is good for someone working in optics or imaging fields, and Semiconductor International is good for folks working in that type of industry as well. I "grew up" with Scientific American (my father subscribes to it still). It is a good one though I don't have time to read it anymore. I pretty much skim through articles these days unless something really jumps out at me.

I once accused Design News of having a fear of formulas, and they cancelled my subscription. I've since been reinstated.
