Telephone vs. VoIP question

Hey folks,

Is it reasonable to consider designing a new office building with no traditional telephone outlets installed? And instead rely upon Voice over IP telephone communication? Is this economically feasable at all?

Already done.

We use Cisco's IP Phones throughout our building. The main advantage is that the our network connections are routed through the phone cabling, thereby simplifying the cabling of the building.

Of course, if your router crashes, so does the phone system

With Power over Ethernet (POE) coming on strong the network cable is staged to replace the phone. We've always plugged the phone in and got power from the same connector so now all your new ethernet hardware soon can do the same (especially once POE routers get mainstream and come down in price). VOIP is a natural fit for this.

A word of caution. For the fire alarm control panel and elevators, you must have analog lines not passing through a switch or other equipment. Basically, a direct connect via punchdowns.
