I am trying to find out the low temperature limit on McMaster Carr bolts. The bolts in question are the black oxide 180 ksi steel bolts. Has anyone looked at this in the past? McMaster Carr told me the manufacturer does not supply this info. I am trying to get the exact material that they are made from, but maybe someone has looked at this.

Unfortunately, this is not something you can control with a catalog product. The bolt suppliers to McMaster will change over time. They may even have inventory from multiple suppliers. Also, there are several common alloy steels that can be used to make a 180ksi fastener and alloy is a big factor in low temp performance. The steel suppliers to the bolt manufacturers will be another variable. You can't have predictable low temp properties without controlling who supplies the steel and what alloy is supplied. If you need to know this, you have to pick a bolt manufacturer and work with them to certify the low temp properties of the bolts you are buying.

If you are looking for guaranteed low-temperature properties for commercial hardware (and depending on your specific needs/environment), you may want to take a look at specifying/buying bolts certified to ASTM A320 (
A google search will yield a great number of potential sources..
