Can anyone explain why a tennis court would crack predominantly on the white lines of a tennis court? Would the temporature differences of the court colors have a noticable impact?

Yes, it is the temperature difference. You see this all the time on asphalt sports courts and parking lots. I think the reason it is not as prevalent on road pavements is that the traffic recompacts the cracks, but that is just my theory.

do you know of any trade papers or publications that documents this? are there any preventive measures that can be installed during construction to deter this from happening. Strips are necessary.

You probably are not using the correct type of paint:

"A highly reflective 100% acrylic marking paint for use over any bituminous surface, or acrylic color coating system in recreational or light traffic areas. Hi-Hide Line Paint will not cause cracking, crazing, peeling, or deterioration to asphalt that is typical of solvent-type traffic paints. "

" F. Playing Lines: Base lines shall be [ [ two (2) ] [ three (3) ] [ four (4) ] ] (be sure to state width of base lines) wide and playing lines not more than two (2) inches wide, accurately located and marked in accordance with rules of the United States Lawn Tennis Association, and painted with a paint recommended or approved by the manufacturer of the color finish material; however, use of traffic, oil, alkyd, or solvent-vehicle type paint is prohibited. The painting shall be done by skilled mechanics in a workmanlike manner in accordance with the manufacturer's standard printed instructions. Prior to white line paint application, line paint tape gap filler shall be applied to reduce incidence of fuzzy lines. "
