Tensile Testing of Nelson Stud 4

Would anyone happen to know if tensile testing a Nelson Stud that is only 2-1/2" in length is generally required? Or given the length of the specimen, would a hardness test be sufficient? I am unable to find a lab outside of my own that has a machine capable of holding something so small. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Enerpac makes a hollow ram that may fill the bill. If you are testing the weld, is would suggest looking at AWS D1.1 section 7 (I think).

The best way to test something is to squeeze it, slowly, until it breaks!

They are often field tested by bending in the field using a hammer...

Depending on application, studs can be tested by applying a torque or a rake test (with a chipping hammer).

Adding to the post by metengr I've see a hardened bar machined to accept the stud and base that with or without a hardened washer allows a measurement of the torque to break the weld.

Also I've seen a lot of hammer test. I was told once this was with a calibrated hammer and certified tester, ha, ha.
