True, but most table tennis players do not think that is a big deal. This YT video has been posted on many table tennis forums and there is a lot of talk about when robots will beat the best table tennis players.

The person playing the robot in the video is very good. He isn't a professional but still very good. He was not trying very hard and should be able to beat the robot easily. I think I could beat that robot now but every year the robot gets better and better.

Curt Wilson works for Omron and is a motion control guru. I was just wondering what Curt Wilson could learn and tell us more information that isn't in the video. The table tennis player in the video didn't ask things I would like to know like how fast is the frame rate. The ball speeds were only displayed to meter per second not to the tenths of meters per second. Can the robot pick a spot on the table where it wants to hit the ball and then strike with just the right paddle speed, spin, and angle to land the ball in the desired spot? Think about how one would do that?

BTW, although the robot can hit from both sides, what if the ball is hit directly at the robot. Can the mass of the robot move to the side to hit the ball?
If you looked a the net you can see the ball was travelling less than 5 m/s most of the time. That is slow.

Noticed both, and certainly wondered whether the player had thought to try dead center shots, but he only came close a few times. Also, didn't see him trying to hit the back edge very much; most world class players wind up at least a few feet further back

That system is out of Omron's robotics group and corporate AI development -- quite separate from our division. Omron is huge, and I am still learning my way around the company. I'll see if I can find out more particulars about it.
