Hi There,

How can I calculate the thermal expantion and thermal displacement for pressure vessel?

The two you note are the same.

You could start by finding the Ccoefficient of thermal expansion may be in (mm/mm/deg C or similar) for the vessel material and multiply that by the temperature range and the length under consideration.

If the temperature increase is uniform then it's a simple calculation. If you have a temperature distribution and through wall temperature gradients then the calculation is more difficult. Some of these cases are covered in sources such as Timoshenko's theory of plates and shells, but more complex cases would need the use of finite element methods.

I think for uniform thermal expansion, you can use basic equation dl/L=k*dT, where k is the temperature coefficient of that material

pandp,
Steps:
1. Find the material of construction.
2. find/determine the installed temperature in Deg C
3. Find/determine the Design or operating temperature in Deg C
4. Using the material from step 1 determine the Expansion Coefficient in mm/mm/Deg C
5. Determine/find the length of the vessel in mm.
6. Thermal Expansion is then Expansion Coeff (from Step 4) multiplied by the temperature difference (Temp in Step 3 minus Temp in Step 2)multiplied by the length of the vessel from Step 5.
7. To calculate the thermal displacement: Thermal Displacement = Thermal Expansion.

Simples really!!!

Expansion Coefficient should be taken as the mean value between the Temp in Step 2 and the Temp in Step 3. ASME VIII Part D has listed Expansion Coefficients.

Hello,

Thanks for everyone's reply.
