thermally conductive, electrical insulator 1

I would like to insulate a coil at 400V from a metal case but allow efficient conduction of heat into case. Temperature about 600 deg. C. Power 1-2 kW. Size 2" diameter.

Could you recommend a material that can take and conduct heat and still maintain electrical insulation.

Device is similar to a heating coil but it is for R&D work.

I have seen heating coils surrounded by a powder in a metal shield. Any idea what this powder might be?

The powder in question is MgO.

Any similar substance that I could pot like a resin?

Glass is interesting however cracking might be a problem as well as casting coil in glass might be be a difficult process for a single test.

Vermiculite or wollastonite,they can be mixed with PF resin and formed into any shape.

It is white, slick like graphite, a fair heat conductor, and a great electrical insulator.

aluminum oxide has reltively high thermal conductivity and is used in thermal grease, available as powder and is inexpensive

DO NOT CONSIDER BERYLLIUM OXIDE EVEN THROUGH IT IS A GOOD THERMAL CONDUCTOR ( material is hazardous !! )

Aluminum Nitride (ALN) is also a strong candidate for a solid but could be expensive.
(used in specialized semiconductor mounting)

Can you use an oil like transformer oil or folrinet (SP?)? The nice thing about an oils that you could get some convention. However, it is messy and sometimes difficult to dispose of. Don't seal the container without some mechanism to allow for expansion.

There are greases like thermalloy that might work.

Diamond powder might work like MgO. It is the filler in some products.

Does Glyptol do this? It used to be used for coating transformers.

I would look at Quartz or Mica. Pyrex might work but you are
pushing the upper temperature limit. Schott make also makes
some high temperature glasses that might meet your requirements..
