thicken sketch button

I am tring to build a extrude of an open profile using the thicken sketch button. It doesnt let me use the open profile for the extrude.

After experimenting with it, I found that if I change to suface then back to soild I am able to create the extude using the thicken sketch.

Any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong?

Proe is working correctly, the thicken functionality is a surface or shell command, in other words it only works with surfaces or shells not solid geometery. can you explain your sketched profile or shape of the part so i have a better understanding of what you are trying to acomplish?
