hello

i have designed a pressure vessel with the following inputs -

design pressure - 25.38 psi
design temperture - 40 degree celcius
corrosion allowance - 0.05 inch
diameter - 83 inches
all material is of carbon steel so i have taken allowable stress as 12900 psi
joint efficiency - 0.7

i have used the formula t = ((P*R)/(S*E-0.6*P))+C for designing the shell thickness and after designing i have taken shell thickness as 6mm or 0.236 inches.

i have used ellipsoidal head thickness formula as t=((P*D)/(2*S*E-0.2*P)+C and after designing i have taken the head thickness also as 6mm.

please just review the thickness calculation and let me know if i am correct so that i can proceed further.

No.

First you need to determine the applicable Code of Construction. Based on your calculation, it would appear that you are using ASME Section VIII, Division 1. You need to follow ALL of the Code in order to calculate a thickness. One or two simple calculations are a good start but inadequate.

Second, you need to specify the ACTUAL material used. You can't just pluck an allowable stress out of mid-air. You need to have it properly referenced to an allowable stress table. Where you get your allowable stress depends wholly on the Code of Construction (see above).

Sorry i forgot to mention, i am designing it by ASME section 8 div 1. Also the material being used is carbon steel of grade S355 that is why i have taken stress as 12900 psi.

Could you please tell me what is wrong in my calculation and also what additional factors i need to consider to find the shell and head thickness.
