Hi Guys
Maybe you can clarify. When using ASME IX and we are requiring CVN testing. Am i right in saying we go to B31.3 where the thickness range is T/2 to T + 1/4 inch. And not the thickness range specified in ASME IX

If you use IX, follow all provisions of IX, unless only if B31.3 has more stringent requirements.

Hi Biginch
So as per ASME B31.3 para 323.3.1 below applies when Charpys required - Correct
material thickness from T/2 to T + 6 mm

If you use the code of construction, such as B31.3, all welding requirements are followed based on code book section requirements. Section IX is a service code book section that provides requirements for how to qualify a WPS and welder performance. If Section IX is referenced, all requirements are followed in Section IX UNLESS specific requirements are provided by the code book section.

Guys
Thanks. I just wanted a simple answer. Thanks DekDee

Yes provided the WPS must be referenced to an applicable code ASME B 31.3 in addition to ASME Sec IX.
Always follow the construction code requirements.
