If someone can provide a basis for this statement would be great.
"If you're talking small pipe (NPS <=2) and cold temperatures (<= 200°F) where the consequence of failure is negligible, then go for U-bolts and assume whatever you want."
This question is related to piping stress analyses to B31.1 or B31.3 of piping systems that are required to be seismically qualified.

I think they're basically saying if you're looking at small bore, not very hot and not process critical or corrosive piping, you don't need to be as conscious of the U-bolt supports and whether or not they stop pipe rotation, etc.

If you're looking at high seismic, you need to be more thorough.

There is obviously little basis for such a comment, even when taken in context. I wouldn't U-bolt anything with a potential lateral load > 100 lbs.
