Through bolt support at Double Tee 1

Is there a location on a Double Tee where you should not have a through penetration for a 3/4" bolt being installed to support piping? I am inspecting some 12" Chiller pipe being supported from each Double Tee in a garage. The contractor has drill holes for two supports approx. 4" down from the top. I would assume it's best to drill and support near the top vs near the bottom? The bolts then support a 7/8" threaded rod for the piping support. Any concerns? It is a complete penetration of the Double TEE.

My only concern would be if they drilled rebar or cable.

I guess if pipe is parallel to the tee, that also could add significant weight that might not be accounted for.

Yes indeed. For a structure like yours:

1) Many / most garage double tees will have straight strand rather than harped strands. Straight is better for planning cores obviously.

2) Where strands are straight, usually you'll be well above the strands by the time that you're 8" up from the bottom of the Tee.

3) If your project can support a little scanning work to on at least one tee, do that. You can't beat actually knowing.

4) Even if your luck fails you and you wind up with harped strands, you've still got a pretty good safe zone to work with as you can imagine.

5) If you're able to gain visual access to the ends of a tee, you may actually be able to see the strand locations.

I just recently added some pipe supports and CMU wall bracing to double tees. We had the contractor scan the beams to find the strands.
