Tilt Up Spandrel Panel Support Column

I have a condition where two panel ends will need to be supported by an hss column at their intersection. The HSS is set inside the corner columns and has been designed as pin-pinned to support the columns. The panels will attach with welded single angle clip angles to embed plates

The top of column horizontal reaction is 1200 lbs.

Is it typical to restrain this condition with an angle in two directions, which is tied to the diaphragm? Or is it more common to tie framing in two directions at this location? The connection of the panels will restrain the connection, but i was concerned about constructibility.

I would just weld the diaphragm angle to the column and call it good. At the bottom of the panels have connections so they can move.

Why can't the corner piece be concrete? The panel from the left could have a column built in at the end. The header piece spanning the opening on the right could be supported by this panel and the return from the other panel.

Maybe I am missing something.

The corner piece cannot be concrete. The support must be set inside the walls to allow for the storefront to bypass on both sides and meet at the corner. An HSS is also a thinner element than a concrete column.

Im pretty certain this is typical of tilt-up construction.

Good point regarding constructability but the panels will have temporary props.

They would need to install the left L shaped panel first.

I would also put a note to say that the column needs to be installed prior to the panels. I had a similar situation where the builder tried to fastrack by missing a supporting column and a guy nearly got hit by an 8 ton panel.

I may not be understanding your sketch correctly, but it appears that the HSS column extends above the underside of the two panels.

I think it would be better to terminate the column at the underside of the panels, possibly with an 'L' shaped cap plate.

The panels would be braced by each other by connecting them top and bottom to prevent rotation.

BA, i would agree with you. However, the architect needs the column inside of the storefront which is inline with the panels.
