I upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7 and at the same time moved from MathCad 14 to MathCad 15 to ensure compatibility with Windows 7 and in the hope of a gaining few bug fixes, otherwise MCAD 15 seems to me to be identical to Mcad 14. I went on the Flexnet license server on the PTC website and got a new license file for MathCad 15 no problem. You do not need to be on support to do this. (You only need to be on support to get known bugs fixed!)
I am using a node locked installation and do not run the Flexnet software server on my computer. I received (via email) a license file named in the format lmxxxxxxxx.txt, and put it in the folder C:\PTC as instructed in the email. MathCad installed OK and on first startup asked where the license file was. I directed it to C:\PTC and it would not run. It kept suggesting I request another license file from PTC, which I did serveral times and got a new license file each time repeating the this useless loop.
Solution:
Mathcad was looking for a file called license.dat. I renamed C:\PTC\lmxxxxxxxx.txt to C:\PTC\license.dat and ... tahdah ... MathCad 15 runs just fine. This inspite of the fact that the email says that either a dat or txt file will work.
To bad they did not include this tip with the instructions in the email.
If you have previously installed MathCad 14 or 15 before and want to do a clean reinstall, just retrieve the old license file from backup and put it somewhere on the same drive. You don't need to bother getting a new license from PTC.
The node locked license is keyed to your motherboard using the pysical address of the Ethernet adapter on the board (format xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx) as displayed in the command console after C:>ipconfig /all. This is termed CPU ID by PTC. If you change mother boards you will need a new license file which you can het from the PTC web site by transfering the license from the old CPU ID to the new one. This is possible even if you are not on the pay for bug fix program (oops I meant support).
