In answer to the above thread's original question: at the part level to toggle transparency of the entire part just click on the transparency column at the top part level of the Display Pane, as shown here:
Remember the display pane visibility can be toggled with F8
Its frustrating the old thread has been closed, as the question remains relevant and I'm sure other people will also come across the page with google.
