Too Old for work?

Hello,

I am 46 with a 4 year degree in PE.. No experience.. is it possible to get a Job? Or should I continue education and hope for s research gig?

I would say most service companies would talk with you for a sales position. Baker, Halliburton Weatherford etc…

You probably just have to market yourself differently. What have you been doing since high school (what is that 18-20 years?) other than the 4 years you spent in college? Unless you were on a beach somewhere drinking and working on your suntan there is probably something there that you can spin into a plus in Oil & Gas. This industry is so diverse that any life experience except the use of drugs is probably applicable. I would look at the whole package and see if I could paint a picture that is attractive.

Some experience is likely even if not engineering. Other technical experience helps. Many things known by those who work are not known by new graduates in early twenties.

Thanks for all if your replies.

I studied went to school HIGH SCHOOL in the canal zone in Panama, I left and moved to the USA and joined the US NAVY, after the Navy I attended a school for the culinary arts and worked as a chef for 10 years, I grew tired of that and attended college at Portland State University (Pre-Med) and earned my Bachelors Degree. I was I started traveling before Med School and moved to Paris and kinda got side tracked lol. I stopped in Paris and worked for 5 years and decided to head back to school. I Have my degree but am not getting job offers.

I may head back to school and finish my MD .. there does not seem to be as much age discrimination in medicine.

I admit I do not have a very good history but... thats life isnt it? lol

Sorry to say it, but if I got your application, it would look to me like you don't know what you want to do when you grow up. You have bounced between too many wildly varied things - cooking to pre-med to a degree in PE. No connection there except the cooking oil - sorry for the pun.

What did you do in the Navy? can you leverage that experience to help with a PE position?

Air Traffic Controller in the Navy.. I agree with you but I wont let that stop me on anything I decide to do..

Wow, air traffic controller. And I thought your background already was about as diverse as it could possibly be.

But....

There's good news in several of those work history's.

Air Traffic Controllers - people who have to perform mistake free work consistently. (Or people could die.)

Cooks (Chef-ing) - there is another type of work where results have to be top notch, timely and are guaranteed noticed when they are not (and people could die.)

Pre-med - depending on your grades, not a walk in the park - shows you are capable of learning.

So, you are looking for the type of job that demands a high degree of perfection and the ability to deliver.

You may want to look for some kind of field technician (Field Service Engineer) type of job. Looks like you don't mind getting around and this can be a good entry into the PE world at your age.

On the other hand, I suspect that I see the makings of a college Prof, so you might think about getting your Masters then PHD and teach.
