A top angle is a rolled angle at the top of the shell. API-650 specifies minimum top angle sizes based on the tank diameter. It is mainly used to help maintain roundness at the top of the tank. For self-supporting cone and umbrella tanks, separate criteria are given for top angle size. In those cases, the top angle is actually acting as a tension ring.

A compression ring is used on a tank with internal pressure to resist the inward tensile forces developed in the roof. A compression ring may be a rolled angle, identical to the top angle above, or may be of various other configurations. See Appendix F in API-650.
