Torque applied to I beam solidworks simulation

hello, i am trying to simulate an I beam that i subjected to a torque of 400Nm the beam is built in at both ends. So far i have put fixtures at either end of the beam and tryed to apply a torque the faces I have selected for the torque is the ends of the beam. I am unsure waht to select as the axis or face of direction, I guess its the centre line of the object but i am unsure how to create a refernces axis. Any help would be much appraciated!

Sounds like you said you applied a load at your fixture, which won't work. Why no create a split face in the centre somewhere (i.e. where the load would be imparted from another object) and then apply the torque. Other wise you could use symmetry, model only half the beam, fix one end and apply the torque to the free end.
 
Ok i created a split face, in the middle of the beam, and applied the torque on that face but it still came up with the error "please select a reference axis or a cyclindrical face to apply torque"
 
Create an axis down the centre and use that for your reference. It needs to know what direction to apply the loads in, so you have to give it some reference geometry.

Select all the tangent edges, or where ever the actual load will be applied. Think about the problem and how the load will be transferred to the beam, then apply the loads in the same manner.
 
Select reference geometry, then select axis. The procedure is slightly different if you are on 2010. You can select two planes to create an axis at the intersection, depends on how you built your part.
 
hello thanks, I have managed to apply a torque using the axis but now i dont know which faces to apply the torque to i am trying to simulate an I beam that is built in at both ends and is being rotated by being subjected to a pure torsion load.
 
What are you trying to simulate? Why is there any torque on the beam?

If you can answer that then you should be able to work out how to apply the loads to the beam. You may need to create some more split faces, not just a line down the centre.
