Hi there,

I am new to power transmission design and I am in need of some help for some analytical techniques in determining the torque capacity of an involute spline(in particular the length of spline required to transmit torque for a certain diameter hollow shaft). Could someone please help me in identifying the standards that give guidance into the design of splines or perhaps give me some guidance into any rule of thumb that exists.

For my problem in question i am looking to reduce the length of spline for a drivetrain. The drive train transmits 300 HP to a splined shaft(Inner diameter 2.25" & Outer Diameter of 2.44"). The current spline is 2.0". Thanks very much.

In the "Standard Handbook for Mechanical Engineers" by Marks, there is an equation for torque capacity of a spline. The equation is T=L*D*D*S/1.2732, where L is the spline length, D is the pitch diameter of the spline, and S is the allowable shear stress of the spline material. I believe this is for a spline shaft and not a hollow shaft. I am not sure which is the case you are looking at. I hope this helps.
