Is it possible to have a huge amount of torsional moment in a single column bent for design of bridges? The superstructure is made of AASHTO girders that were placed above the coping beam.

The model from STAAD produced a value of 11000 KN-m. The designer did not release the My in the model though it is free to translate in both directions.

Sounds like a modeling problem--is it really possible for the column to pick up that much torsion? Can the torsion be resisted in another way, such as in the diaphragm (bridge deck)?

I'm inclined to agree that it's a modeling problem. I can't picture a bridge column experiencing torsion. I'm not saying it's impossible; it just doesn't seem likely.
