Torsionally restrained connection detail 1

Hi all,

I've got a newly applied torsional moment to an RHS which is currently fasted to a PFC on both ends with a single bolt. Please see attached sketch.

If I attach a flat bar to the top of the RHS and tie it back to the PFC does this provide torsional restraint?

I have been looking at this document SCI P385 and it seems to suggest a full depth end plate is required (
nb. the torsional moment acts in only one direction.

Just look to the page 41 of the document that you released (SCI 358 ) :

If you attach a flat bar to the top of the RHS and tie it back to the flange of channel , this set up will provide torsional restraint. The end of RHS could be closed with a cap for better resistance.

Well there be a tendency for you cranked tension member to want to straighten out when pulled? A triangular stiffener instead would sort this out.
 
How large is the torsional moment? A couple of flare bevel welds may work.

Rather than think climate change and the corona virus as science, think of it as the wrath of God. Feel any better?

Not able to weld unfortunately as the channel members are already in place.

How do you design a bevel weld, do you do it as a fillet weld but change the angle to suit the rounded edge on the hollow section?
