Does anyone have any references for the material properties of Trailer Hitch Tubes?

Are they just HSS Tubes with the weld bead removed from the inside?

I've tried googling, but not found any clear answers on the tubing.

Thank you!

Thank you dauwerda. That is a start for my research. We'll see if anyone else has some sources.

We have a need for a winch mounted to the side of a steel frame structure, but would prefer not to have the winch out in the weather.

The working load will be about ~6000lbs, so a 12,000 or 15,000lb automotive winch might work for our needs. (I haven't reviewed the ASME Below the Hook document yet to see what my factor of safety needs to be.)

I am thinking I could do something with automotive hitch tubes so that the client can attach and detach the winch somewhat quickly.

I'd be careful about using an off the shelf automotive winch as a lifting device- they're not rated as such as are labeled that way in my experience. You may want to look at replacement spider crane or bridge crane winches.
