Can anyone give an idea of the formalised/ governement approved training and education structurea and material available in their country ? I know that the UK, for instance, has certain requirements which have to be satisfied by people in the industry. At the same time, training is available.

There are several places in the United States that offer certifications, and classes. One of the beter ones that I suggest is NICET (National Institute Civil Engineering Technologies). [sig][/sig]

In Canada we have a national engineering accreditation process which accredits engineering schools. There is currently a reciprocal agreement with the South African engineering school accreditation process referred to as the Washington Accord. This agreement includes the US ABET agency.

On a provincial basis, there are not-for-profit certification boards which provide training programs and test/certify treatment plant operators. These training programs are taught mostly by volunteers, with some minor cost to the participants. The three to five days of training courses include accredited exams for certification. Certification is based on training and experience. This is similar to the US. In the US the Water Environment Federation offers CD-ROM based training programs.
