Hi,
Does anyone have any info on repairing helical cut ring gears? The damage is very minimal approx 1/16" x 1/4" on 3 of about 70 teeth. The damage is limited to the very outer edge of the teeth.

The gear is (was)practically new. Damaged during differential swap. Replacement cost is about $400. Is it worth trying to repair?

Thanks for your insight.

Very unlikely you'll be able to repair it successfully. Metallurgy and heat treating of automotive gears has evolved over decades and is very sophisticated. Suggest you bite the bullet and buy the new replacement gear.

If the damage is outside of the tooth contact area, there are no other cracks not seen, and you are willing to accept some level of increased failure risk, then perhaps you can run them.

Repair seems unlikely as philrock states above.

depends on what facewidth you have left after grinding to blend in. If it's a good percentage it's worth a try. The blending must be "gentle" with no sharp corners

Thanks to everyone for replying.

Here’s some more detailed info:

Gear O.D. 7 3/4”
Gear width 1 1/8”
Tooth face height 1/4”
Tooth face width 1 5/16”

Damage w. 1/16”
Damage h. 1/4"

If my math is correct this makes the damage area about 11% of the contact area of the tooth.

Does this seem like it’s too much.

I should also mention the damage is looks to only be the depth of the hardening.

Thanks again

It all depends on the power going through it and whether you still have overlap. If the tooth can still take the load being that bit shorter then OK, but you also need an overlap to ensure the damaged tooth is still in contact as the next tooth enters mesh.
