Hello everyone,

We have already discussed many times in this forum regarding the Travelling Speed of a Floating Roof. All are generic answers and based on experience.

Iam designing few Tanks and was asked the Travelling speed of the Floating Roof to judge the wear & tear (including for the Seals).

Can anyone throw some light, as how to calculate the Travelling speed (formulas if any), if I have answers for the following:
a) Fill in time
b) Pump out time
c) Maximum fill in rate
d) Maximum pump out rate
e) Tank Circumferential Area

Advance thanks for your help.

Thanks,
JAS

Well the vertical roof speed is simply volumetric flow in or out divided by square are in the same units.

So if your inflow is 1000m3/hr and your square area is 500m2, your vertical speed is 2m/hr.

I asked this some time ago and effectively determined that there was no speed restriction.

I suspect seal wear is much more responsive to the number of fill/ empty cyces experienced and age of the seal.

Cold temps or extremes of temp probably don't help either , neither does sticky or waxy product
