Trouble exporting geometry into IGES

Dear forum members,

I'm trying to export some parts - an assembly - into IGES, to use in Abaqus CAE. I have selected the parts I wish to export, and the log files tell me that the IGES file has been successfully created. Yet when I import the IGES sketch into Abaqus, only 1 part is there. This has never happened before.

Can anyone tell me what might went wrong? Any help is much appreciated.

thanks,
jo

How are you doing the export?
Interactive will only export the assembly file, with no components.
Use the standalone IGES program. That will export the assembly and all components.

Thanks looslib for your reply.

What is a standalone IGES program? How do I use it?

Currently I go to File --> Export --> IGES
I click on Class Selection and then merrily choose the geoms I wish to export, only it doesn't work so merrily well this time.

Managed to export the geom I wanted yesterday, but I'd appreciate your explanation on the standalone IGES, if possible.

thanks

Start Meneu - Programs - UGS/NX - Translators - IGES
Something like that depending on how it was loaded.

The alternative for File - Export is to use the file from disk, instead of memory.

Found it! I'll have to experiment with this one. Thank you so much :)

It would be better to use a SAT (ACIS) or Parasolid export format to go to Abaqus/CAE. It is almost aways more reliable than "I guess", I mean iges. ;)

I agree with brep, I try to stay away as much as I can from IGES.

Thanks brep and vriyg for your reply.

I'm afraid I can't do much in choosing the file format - my company's FEA procedure is to use IGES. Your feedback has given me a thought though... I should ask my seniors why we opt for IGES instead of the other formats.

thanks,
jo
