Tube Sheet Design according to various codes

1. Once it was an interesting topic to observe wide variations in thickness of Tube sheet designed according to TEMA / BS / ADM for same design conditions. TEMA giving highest thickness and ADM giving lowest & Thin Tube Sheet. More confusion in the minds of the Designer. However, Client's choice of code used to govern.Commercial Computer programs were also not available then.

2. Now TEMA Tube Sheet Design is non mandatory and mostly not used. But some clients still ask to design Tube Sheet to TEMA and ASME Sec VIII Div 1 UHX and adopt whichever is higher. What is the intention. Is it not playing extra safe and conservative.

3. Leaving aside TEMA, presently ASME Sec VIII div1 & 2, BS 5500 / EN 13445, AD Merk Blatter are in vogue, how thicknesses of Tube Sheet(especially the fixed Tube sheet) are comparing. Is there any rationalisation.

4. What are Thin Tube Sheets(especially Fixed Tube Sheets). Do they have specific design approach?

Codes are divided in 3 parts: design, fabrication and inspection. You need to understand these 3 parts, you don't have to understand just the mathematical formulas.

Dear r6155. Thank you for the response.
My question pertained to the Design of Tube Sheets according to the indicated codes and the variations thereof.
I don't think this is addressed in your response.

I'm with r6155 on this. I don't think that you can separate the design from the fabrication and inspection/testing. Comparison can only be done on a holistic level.

DK44,

This is an interesting issue .....

However, how is it that you somehow feel that you can issue a demand for an engineering research paper by a group of strangers ?

Thank you for your remarks.
As a working Engineer, it is the curiosity to know the subject from the experts and experienced in the Design filed about the basic Design aspects of such important component of Heat Exchanger.
Sincerely look forward to have the views of the experts in clarification.
