Hi All,

I have a PQR (Charpy tested) and a WPS with a qualification range of 3mm to 12mm. My question is: I need to perform tube-to-tubesheet welding—can this PQR/WPS be used to cover the welding, referencing the code for the mock-up test? In that case, is a PWPS required for the mock-up test?

ps client’s spec doesn’t mentioning anything about tube to tubesheet welding apart referring to the code

Thanks

Solution
This depends on the code of construction:
e.g.
ASME VIII/2, 6.3.4 require qualification acc. to QW-193 (mock-up test)
"6.3.4 QUALIFICATION OF WELDING PROCEDURE
Tube-to-tubesheet welding procedure specifications shall be qualified in accordance with the requirements of Section IX, QW-193."

ASME VIII/1 do not require for Tube-to-Tubesheet Welds qualification the use of QW-193 except, if Tube-to-Tubesheet Welds
acc. to fig. UW-20.2(f) to (i) are used. For these joints mock-up qualification is required by note (3) to this fig.

For all other tube-to-tubesheet welds within the scope of ASME VIII/1, follow ASME IX, QW-202.6, which means that for pressure-retaining tube-to-tubesheet welds you have two options:
(a) groove welds per the requirements of QW-202.2 (Qualification for Groove Full Penetration Welds) and QW-202.4 (Dissimilar Base Metal Thicknesses)
(b) a demonstration mockup per the requirements of QW-193.1
