Hi,

I am developing a product which communicates through an installation terminal program running at a notebook computer. The product uses its UART / serial port to communicate, the problem is that nowadays most notebooks don't have serial port. My question is that, I know most notebooks now have built-in internal modems, can I turn that modem into a serial port? or can I use it as a serial port? Thanks guys.

Why not USB? That would allow desktops as well to control your product

USB port on the equipment/device will add complexity and cost. If there is easy way to use serial port, we would like to use serial port rather than USB.

i ve not worked in that way but im sure it could be, try to find a socket (program) which allow you to connect to the modem and to send data.

what level are you working at? are you developing the product or selling it?

a little more info would be helpful in order to be helpful...

7878: You can't make a modem a serial port without a hardware change or hardware adapter. And that change will differ from brand to brand.

Andy: I guess you are right. Thanks Andy.

Killa: I am not trying to send data through modem. I need to send data through a serial port, I want to turn PC's modem port into a serial port just like other serial ports that a PC may have. We are developing products, and our products need to get information from PC through a serial port connection. I think Andy might be right and I cannot bypass the modem and use the serial port without hardware change.

But for a while I do hope that there will be some softare/firmware code that I can apply to the modem to disable its modem specific functions and feed the data it gets from the serial port right through to its RJ11 port.

What you have last suggested is not possible. The analog outputs of a modem are required to sustain a much harsher environment, being connected to external phone lines, than the circuitry internal to the modem.

Therefore, there would never be a means of connect the serial UART output to the modem output under normal circumstances.

There are very inexpensive (<$20US) USB <-> Serial port converters. Plug it into your computer's USB port, install the software drivers that comes with the product, and bingo; you have a serial port on your computer.
