We have a de-ionized water tank in operation in which we have experienced issues with algae growth.

The line feeding the tank is treated with a ultraviolet sterilization system. After testing immediately before and after the UV system it appears to be working very well. However once the water is in the tank, there is nothing to prevent the growth of algae. Depending on the time of year, and production rates, the test show the microbial levels can increase dramatically.

I am considering circulating the water continuously through the UV system.

With our current equipment, I could turn the tank over about twice a day.

I am trying to find some reference to the recommended number of turnovers to determine if twice is sufficient. My gut filling is it will improve our situation significantly, but it is not going to eliminate the issue completely. I suspect we will still have to disinfect the tank on some occasion to resolve growth on the walls of the tank.

Has anyone seen any literature which would offer some guidance or had a successful experience doing such?

Thank you.

Is this DI water tank N2 gas blanketed, or does it have an open vent to atmosphere ? If it is open vented, this may most likely be the route algae and bacteria get into the tank.

Hi,
To my knowledge the supply line to users should have a UV treatment in service to mitigate the risks. It will be better to have it continuously in service having a recirculation line in place in case of no water usage. This is based on my experience producing Latex in humid country (Indonesia) and Surfactants in Thailand.
Note: You did not supply any information about your process, the storage capacity, the water usage, the material of the tank, the possibility of air ingress.

An audit of your unit by your water treatment company will help you to find ways for improvement.

Good Luck
Pierre
